The Japanese Bobtail is part of a large group of shorthaired cats. It is a cat of medium size. Although the head appears long and finely chiselled, it should form almost a perfect equilateral triangle with gentle curving lines, high cheekbones and a noticeable whisker break. The nose is long and well defined by two parallel lines heading from the tip to the brow, which are gently dipped at, or just below, the eye level. Ears are large, upright, set wide apart, at right angles to the head. In repose they give the impression of being tilted forward. Eyes are large, oval rather than round, wide open and alert. Their colour should harmonize with the coat colour. Permitted colours are blue, orange and odd-eyed. The set of the eyes together with high cheekbones lend the face the impression, particularly in profile, of a distinct Japanese expression, which differs this breed from other breeds of oriental types of cats. The torso is long, slender and elegant, with well-developed muscles. Hind legs are noticeably longer than the front. The tail gives an expression of stump or pom-pom. The furthest extension of the tailbone from the end of the body should be approximately five to eight centimeters, even though the tailbone, if straightened out to its full length, might be ten to thirteen centimeters long. The hair on tail is somewhat longer and thicker than body hair, growing outward and also creating the pom-pom effect. The coat is short, soft and silky, but without a noticeably undercoat. The nose leather and paw pads should harmonize with coat colour. Faults, which could even lead to a disqualification, include the absence of a tail bone, or the tail extending too far beyond the body, or the tail without the pom-pom. Since January 1, 1998, FIFe has recognized all colour varieties, except varieties with point-restrictions, Abyssinian colouring and silvery varieties.
