The Cornish Rex belongs to the group of short, wavy haired cats. It is a medium sized cat. The head has a shape of a medium sized wedge. Its length should be approximately one-third longer than its maximum width. The head significantly tapers to the chin. The profile is flat from the forehead to the tip of the nose. The skull is flat, the nose is straight and the chin is strong. Whiskers and eyebrows are crinkled or curved. Ears are large, wide at the base. They taper to rounded tips and are covered with fine hair. They are set high on the head. Eyes are large, almond-shaped; they are bright, clear and pure, all colours which correspond to the colour variety. The body is of medium length, hard, muscular, but slender. Legs are long, straight and slender, giving an overall appearance of being high on legs. Paws are small and oval. The tail is long, thin and tapering. It is covered with wavy hair. The coat is short, dense, slightly plushy, without guard hairs. It is curly or wavy, particularly on the back and on the tail. Cornish Rex kittens are born with wavy hairs, which start to narrow after approximately a week of their lives. They keep this non-exhibit condition until they gain (together with definitive teeth) a definitive wavy coat. All colour varieties and patterns are recognized, including combinations with white. Any amount of white is permitted. FIFe recognizes 1093 colour varieties, which are sorted into seven ranking groups according to combination of colours, patterns and badges.
