The Chartreaux belongs to the group of shorthaired cats. In general, a clear distinction should be drawn between the Chartreaux and the Russian Blue and the British Blue. Thus, crossing of the Chartreaux with these two breeds is undesirable. The skull is well-developed, not bulging, with a narrow space between the ears. The jowls are broad, and viewed from the front they lend the head the shape of a trapezoid, wide at the base. The nose is broad and straight. The extremity of the muzzle may jut out from the jowls. The nose leather and paw pads are blue-grey. Ears are medium sized, set high on the head, only slightly flaring. This lends the cat an attentive, alert look. Eyes are large, not too rounded. The outer corner is slightly turned upwards. The colour is vivid, from deep yellow to deep copper. Traces of green, and faded, watery colours are undesirable. The body is solid, firm and muscular. The chest is broad and well-developed. Males must always appear strong in relation to their size. The legs are medium long, with strong muscles. They should be in good proportion to the body and not be too high. The tail is of medium length, in proportion to body, slightly tapering, but the tip must be rounded in shape. The tail is of the same colour as the body. The coat is glossy and dense. The undercoat is slightly woolly and very dense. The double coat makes an impression of standing or erect hair. All shades of blue are permissible, ranging from pale blue-grey (preferred) to a deeper blue-grey. The females are significantly smaller, having a narrower chest. However, she also should be robust and well muscled. Most kittens have a light shade of a drawing at the birth, which usually slowly fades as the cat matures. Faults of this breed include snubbed nose, unclear eye colour, single white hairs in the coat, a too-pronounced difference of the colour of coat to the undercoat, as well as brownish or reddish tinges in the coat colour. All international organizations recognise only one colour variety - solid blue.
